DOSBOX 0.62

DosBOX is an open-source project which has one sole purpose: revive the good old DOS games (j/k - it's far beyond than that). It's pretty easy to configure and use and you definitely must start seeking for those old floppy disks from 1992...

  • The usual cpu/fpu emulation fixes and speedups.
  • Soundblaster 16 and opl3 emulation added.
  • Internal mixer updated with interpolation and volume support.
  • Intelligent MPU-401 emulation added.
  • ISO/Disk image mounting support.
  • Custom chipset emulation for cga, tandy hercules modes.
  • Improved pc-speaker emulation.
  • Improved GUS emulation.
  • Added a keymapper.
  • VGA/VESA Bios fixes.
  • IPX networking support.
  • A zillion internal dos fixes/updates.
  • New ddraw rendering output and new render functions.

GreekMAME 0.87 released!

This will probably be 'all Greek to you' if you're not a Greek, but it was something that many people (mainly close friends) have asked me for.

GreekMAME is a MAME32 build with Greek GUI and a rather tiny list of supported games. If you're Greek, you may be interested on it; if not, nevermind... :)

GreekMAME dedicated page is located here.

MAME 0.87u1 source update

Haze released today the latest diff file update. Model 2 updates mainly, but other stuff as well:

New Clones supported or promoted from GAME_NOT_WORKING status:
--------------------------------------------------------------

Painted Lady (Splash) (Ver 1.3 US) [Manuel Abadia]

New Non-Working games / clones supported
----------------------------------------

Tatsumi Driver [Bryan McPhail]
playable to a degree, but not really working properly

Apache 3
Round Up 5
Cycle Warriors

Incredibly complex hardware! These are all different boards, but share
a similar sprite chip (TZB215 on Apache 3, TZB315 on others). Other
graphics (road, sky, bg/fg layers) all differ between games.

Todo:
Sprite rotation
Finish road layer (Round Up 5)
Implement road layer (Apache 3, Cycle Warriors)
BG layer(s) (Cycle Warriors)
BG layer (Round Up 5) - May be driven by missing VRAM data
Round Up 5 always boots with a coin inserted
Round Up 5 doesn't survive a reset
Dip switches
Various other things..

Sega Model 2 Driver [R.Belmont]
(see model2.c for list of games)
Tilemaps, sound, and inputs working to varying degrees
in various games. Most of the games at least start
up, although some don't and some crash.

Download available at Haze's. Get your compilers ready, it's gonna be a full build... :(

Model 2, anyone?

R. Belmond turns up the heat on the WiP arena. Graphics, but no sound for the moment, but WHO REALLY CARES!?!?!? Click here now! Great job Arbee!

PearPC unleashed!

Chances are that most of you will go 'wow' when you'll manage to get this emulator "up 'n' running". PearPC seems to be the most accurate way to emulate an Apple(TM) Macintosh(TM) G3 computer, today. It manages to emulate the basic hardware making it possible to load up from Linux up to OSX 10.x.x. as a host OS. It's main problem seems to be the MMU; a "Memory Management Unit" -yes, PowerPC still has one of those, while PCs got rid of them sometime back in 1992- while sound emulation is on it's way.

Here's a screenshot of the emulator running OSX:

while you may find more of them here.

The source and binaries can be downloaded from here.

Unix on GBA!?!

"It's impossible" tends to be a rather outdated expression nowadays in the computer industry. I have so many times tried to understand how that weird idea which was implemented lately worked out; and at that very moment, another one pops in!.

So here it is. Unix on the Gameboy Advance! Provided you already have the extra gear (Memory module that is) and the time to get involved!

Extraordinaire! :)

Geoanas page updated!

George Anastasiades (a.k.a.:GEOANAS) the author of Greek MAME FAQ and a personal friend of mine asked me to post this in order to save his marriage... ;-)
He begs for mercy from his wife Johanna as she told him clearly after his latest collection update:

"If you ever, EVER buy another thing like that I will straightly mail it to Whacker!..."

As a close friend I ought to say to George's wife to forgive George once more... and...

YES JOHANNA! YES!!! MAIL IT!!! MAIL IT!!!! :-D

Now, seriously, GREAT collection George. I envy you...

RAINE 0.41.1 released!

Raine, the undead emulator has got another update: From the changelog:

  • DX : When loading dkongjp after dkong, the levels were still drawn for dkong. It's fixed now.

  • DX : pacman and mspacman now have big flashing power pills !

  • DX : pacman/mspacman : fruits on the bottom of screen match fruits in the level!

  • Applied patch from Ville Skytta to have language files in lower case (after all only dos/windows is case insensitive, all the serious OS in the world are case sensitive ! )

  • Fixed the colour of the gun in opwolf and zombie raid (and every game actually using the gun) for color depths > 8 (bug related to changes for the sdl video driver).

  • Fixed sound card name (SDL was displayed in the sound driver selection dialog).

Also the source package can now be compiled without modification
For the linux version, notice that you should avoid using artsd (the kde sound daemon) with the sdl sound driver or you will get segmentation faults. It's not specific to raine, it's between sdl and artsd.

Download from the official Raine site.

MAME 0.86u3 diff released!

Chd time! Haze has released a new source update which involves a great deal of changes a.f.a.i.c. the popular CHD format. Here's what's new:

0.86u3

Driver Improvements:
--------------------
Converted some CD images to CHD [R.Belmont]
Regression Fixes for Starblad and Simpsons [R.Belmont]
restored polygon drawing in starblad
corrected clocks in simpsons
Fixed black squares in ozon1 [Pierpaolo Prazzoli]
Fixed filenames in some of the sets added in the previous update [Pierpaolo Prazzoli]
Donkey Kong Sample improvements [Pete Rittwage, Derrick Renaud]
Namco Classics Improvements [R.Belmont]
- Added H8/3002 MCU and C352 sound chip. Both ncv1
and ncv2 are now fully playable with full sound and
music.
Hyper Neogeo 64 Improvements [David Haywood]
I won't be doing much work on this again until I buy some more RAM
so don't expect too much. Needs a kludge in the MIPS core so the
changes aren't very visible in a normal build (details of the
required kludge are in the source)
Gottlieb Input Changes [B.S.Ruggeri]

CPU / Sound Core Improvements
-----------------------------
H8/3002 Fixes [R.Belmont]
- Fixed btst #imm, @Rn instruction - it was giving
reversed results, which crashed ncv2's MCU program.
Namco C352 update [R.Belmont]
- Many many fixes to wave start/end/bank handling plus
added chain mode support. Thanks to cap @ VivaNonno
for the tips.

General Improvements:
--------------------
CHDMAN update [R.Belmont]
This makes the parser deal with .toc files output by
current cdrdao better. I need to just give in and
rewrite it for 2-pass operation sometime, it'll be
much cleaner then.
Incidentally, if anyone has any idea where to get
specs for e.g. CloneCD or some other popularish image
format(s) let me know and I'll add support.
Fixed for the random key mappings bug with new config system [Aaron Giles]
Input Port Fixes [Aaron Giles]
- reversed pedals now work correctly (e.g., brake in Hard Drivin')
- all relative controls (dial, trackball, mouse) scale the same regardless
of the number of bits allocated for that port

New Games supported or promoted from GAME_NOT_WORKING status:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Namco Classics Vol.2 [R.Belmont]
some tile flip problems in classic pacman / rallyx
some sound problems (hanging sound in digdug classic)

New Non-Working games / clones supported
----------------------------------------
Zero (bootleg of Defender) [Pierpaolo Prazzoli]

Radical Bikers emulator!

I know this is old news, but I think it's still popular. Aaron Giles has released an emulator of the popular game Radical bikers. I used to play it on the PSX, but this seems better... :)
