The infamous Hitachi DVD RPC2 reset utility
IMPORTANT NOTE: Ver.2.9 is the final version of HitachiHack. Drives of the series: HL-DT-(your model here) like HL-DT-STRW/DVD GCC-4240N DVD etc. cannot reset their RPC2 counter with this software. These drives are using another CPU which is not compatible with the way HitachiHack operates. The only way to play multi-region DVD disks is a program called DVD-Region Free (which unfortunately is not free - it costs $39.95). This will operate with ANY DVD-drive on the marked, plus it won't even ask you to change region when you insert a DVD disk - the player will just start playing flawlessly.   HitachiHack version 2.9 (Final)
Hitachi Hack V. 2.9
This program needs Windows 98,SE,ME,2000 or XP to work. It's also essential to have a CORRECTLY installed ASPI layer or else it will fail to fulfill what it's destined to... This version of the Hitachi Hack program, resets the Region Protection Counter of the following Drives:

HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-7000
HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-7500
HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-8000
COMPAQ DVD-ROM GD-8000
HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-S200
HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-S250
HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8160B
COMPAQ DVD-ROM GDR8160B
HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8081N
HL-DT-STRW/DVD GCC-4080N
Compaq DVD-ROM GDR8081N

to the original '4 more times' limit, and it also sets the new region of the drive that YOU have chosen from a menu ON-THE-FLY!

 MINI-FAQ
(PLEASE read...)

NOTE 1: In order for this utility to work, it needs an RPC-2 Drive. This means that IT WILL NOT WORK ON A MODIFIED (hacked with an altered bios) Drive. For example: If you used such an utility, to modify the bios of your GD-7500 to be an RPC-1 drive, what you need is a program like DVD Genie, NOT this utility.

NOTE 2: In order for this utility to work as it should, it needs a PROPERLY installed ASPI layer (provided by Adaptec). NO Ahead's, Nero WNASPI32.DLL won't do the job!. I will also propose, a program called which is doing the same job as the official instaspi.exe from Adaptec, but I guess it's your call on which utility you are going to use. As for the people who e-mail me about the postings on Microsoft's site related to the Windows 2000/XP(TM) Operating System and the ASPI layer, please listen to my advice: ALL NT-based Windows above win2k are working just fine with the ASPI layer installed (read next statement). I developed the hack under such a configured machine! (On the other hand if you're sticking to MS's Support 24/7, look elsewhere for something similar...)

Download Adaptec's ASPI from here.

Search for forceaspi on the net by clicking .

NOTE 3: WinXP and Hitachihack

Many people have been asking me about this so I guess I had to make a post about it at farzeno's forum. I am posting it here as well: If your drive IS on the support list (read above) and you cannot reset it, it's because you simply don't have ASPI layer installed properly (or at all). The only way to do this (and I am tired to say it over and over) is to locate 'FORCEASPI 1.7' (look above) on the net and unpack it. Then run a) killaspi.bat and b) instaspi.bat - reboot and you're all set. In some cases this might not work though (it usually happens to some 'custom made' windows versions shipped with certain laptops and/or desktops) The only way there is to locate the ASPI files (they are 4 in total) and remove them manually. Then install the ASPI again. All the above have a meaning, more to win2k/winXP users, as the win9x platform is coming with ASPI layer installed. In the case that you have ASPI installed and you tried the utility with your Compaq GD-8000 DVD and the HACK button isn't enabled (that means your drive isn't on the support list) please email me with a screenshot of the Hitachi Hack window. (Most possible you have a different identification string version than what Hitachi Hack supports - It's no problem, I can add this drive as well...) That's all...

NOTE 4: 'Unable to create list of devices' error

It's simply the case of a mixed ASPI layer - ie, Your ASPI layer consists of some files from 4.6 and some from 4.7 (or other) version. Refer to the above statement to solve the problem with ForceASPI 1.7
